Throughout his professional life, Bo Strange has strived to fulfill a need and his more than 30-year career has centered on providing much needed public services. Today, Bo stays true to his passion by delivering a very important service that most of us take for granted – portable restrooms. His company Lovely Loo provides facilities for a wide range of events throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
Clients of Lovely Loo, a small family owned business, have come to expect refreshingly personalized service as well as top quality amenities that flush away the typical preconceptions about portable restrooms. We’re talking wood floors, fresh mints, and event-coordinated flower arrangements. Lovely Loo offers it all. We recently caught up with Bo to learn more.
Tell us a bit about your professional background. I started as a volunteer firefighter and lifeguard when I was 16 years old. I then joined the Florida Army National Guard where I served as a combat medic and helicopter flight medic. I later earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice Administration and have been with St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office for 24 years.
How did you get your start in this industry? I was looking for something that would offer flexible hours, independence, and something I could transition into from my law enforcement career. I started researching services that fulfilled a need, and came upon portable sanitation, and more specifically portable restrooms for special and upscale events. I then contacted others who were in the business, but not in this geographic area, and got a lot of information from them. I also joined PSAI (Portable Sanitation Association International), a professional trade organization that offers training and additional resources.
At what types of events would someone find a Lovely Loo restroom? I started off with a restroom trailer that can serve events ranging in size from a backyard party or wedding reception, to a large festival, sporting event, or any situation you can think of that a temporary restroom is needed. I later added portable toilets, commonly called port-a-lets or porta-potties.
So, what’s the difference between a porta-potty and a boutique portable restroom? A porta-potty could be a very basic type like those used on a construction site – with few, if any, extra features. A boutique portable restroom offers customized amenities like, air conditioning or heat, flushing toilets, wood floors, sinks with fresh water, vanities, and mirrors.
What sets Lovely Loo apart from other boutique portable restroom providers? Being a small business owner, I feel we are able to offer increased personalized service than commonly found in this industry. I handle all email communication and every call placed to Lovely Loo goes to my personal cell phone.
Even though our equipment is new, I have tried to add some extra items like wood floors and murals in the trailer as well as mints, LED candles, and sometimes flowers to match the occasion. Our basic porta-potty has a hand sanitizer, mirror, coat hook and shelf. We recently added a pink porta-potty that is a flushable model with lighting and a freshwater sink.
In addition to your work with the Sherriff’s office and Lovely Loo, you’re also a busy Dad! Tell us a little about your family. Yes, my wife Amanda is a third grade teacher at Ketterlinus Elementary School and we have 3 children: Miles (6), Lilly (4), and Sutton (2).
